Staying in History

The Vogt House, built 1899.

29 Bogard Street is a Victorian-era Charleston single house with more than 125 years of documented history. A few highlights from the property's historical research:

1785

Colonel Barnard Elliott lays out Elliottborough on his family's lands near King Street. Together with Daniel Cannon's neighboring subdivision, it grows into today's Cannonborough-Elliotborough.

1800s

The lot sits on the Percy lands, named for Reverend William Percy. By the antebellum era it belongs to John Thomson, a Scottish-born merchant and farmer who lived just around the corner on Percy Street.

1899

Meta Vogt, a German immigrant, buys lot 9 and builds the house. She shares it with her husband Frederick, a tinsmith, her daughter Adeline, and Adeline's young family.

1926

Margaret Boyler buys the house and divides it into two residences, renting to hardworking Charlestonians. That two-suite layout is the one guests stay in today.

1938

Hulda Bursky rents the house to young workers from the Charleston Navy Base and their families; in the 1950s and 60s it is home to Black navy yard workers.

2000s

After a renovation, the house draws a new generation of Charlestonians: college students and young professionals move in as Cannonborough-Elliottborough fills with cafes and restaurants.

2020s

The house begins welcoming guests as a furnished rental, its two 1926 residences reborn as Suite A and Suite B for traveling professionals and extended stays.

Today

Now over 125 years old, the renovated single house keeps its piazza, gable roof, and traditional wood windows, letting guests step back into turn-of-the-century Charleston.
